Summer of Me

3 months. 30 minutes. Every day.

Last day - Sass, source maps and live editing!

When September 1st hit, I thought, "Where did August go?" and now summer is over. I realized I haven't posted in a whole month but you what? I still feel like my #summerofme project was a success. The point of it was to learn how to make stuff just for fun, not worry about perfection, try new things and to just keep at it.

Day 52-62 - HTML Resume

So, it's been crazy the few weeks. The Distill Conference is all wrapped up, though I'm waiting for them to post the videos of the talks because my slides make absolutely no sense without hearing what I'm saying! The new Ladies Learning Code CSS workshop is also all done though I need to tweak the content since it ran way too long.

Day 40-51 - Update

I haven't given up on #summerofme, I've just been a little sidetracked. Between preparing for my talk at Distill and creating a brand new CSS workshop for Ladies Learning Code and working on another contract, I've been putting in some work!

Day 35 to 39 - Updates + 1 CSS trick, attribute selectors!

It's been pretty crazy this week so I've just been doing some "easy" #summerofme updates. I fixed some responsive bugs on the site and did some reading. Keeping it simple. But I feel like I should share something. So here's a little CSS trick for reducing class names. How many of you have done this before?

Day 31 to 34 - Processing & Pointillism

I created this page using the exact same structure as my last Processing sketch and for some reason it won't embed. So just check out the link below because I don't want to mess with this anymore tonight. The file structure of this site is so terrible. UGH. Anyway, back to the sketch. If you move the mouse around, it will change the size of the points. Guess the album cover!!!

Day 27 - 30 - Blog post

I've finally finished this blog post that I've been working on for a long time. I'm going to be doing a talk about diversity (or should I say lack of diversity) in tech in August and I wanted this to be a precursor to the talk. It took so long to write because it is a personal topic for me.

Day 24 - 26 - Sublime Text tricks!

I'm still working on the same blog post and it will definitely take a little longer so I have another blog post for today! As someone who is constantly changing class and variable names, after I've written a bunch of code, I've found the Find in Files feature in Sublime Text to be a lifesaver.

Day 21 - 23 - Refactoring & Blog Post

Still tweaking the animated balloons and just realized it doesn't work on Firefox :( I'm also working on a blog post about diversity in tech as a precursor to the talk I'm going to give at the Distill Conference in August.

Day 20 - Refactoring & Sass Mixins

I'm revisiting my animated balloons and converting all of the redundant CSS to mixins and also using the @for directive to loop through the mixins and classes so I can create different styles for the balloons without physically writing "balloon-1, balloon-2, etc". It's not ready yet so I don't want to post it yet but hopefully it'll be done tomorrow.

Day 18 & 19 - Readin' & Learnin'

The last two days have been kind of hectic so yesterday and today, I'm just going to keep reading JavaScript and JQuery: Interactive Front-End Web Development by Jon Duckett as my daily project!

Day 16 & 17 - CSS3 Animations

For the last two days, I've been playing around with CSS3 keyframe animations. And since it's my husband's birthday today, I made him an animated card! The Sass/CSS is a mess so I won't bother going into it too much today. It could use a little tidying up and smoother transitions but there will be another 30mins to work on that another day!

Day 14 & 15 - Old Dog, New Tricks

I didn't post yesterday but for the last two days, I've been reading JavaScript and JQuery: Interactive Front-End Web Development by Jon Duckett as my daily project. I'm not that far into it because, though it is #summerofme, it is also Summer and I didn't want to spend more than 30 mins on it. And, I was out last night :)

Day 13 - Stuff

I wanted to do something with canvas but these boxes was pretty much as far as I got since I didn't have much time today and I think I'll need more than 30mins for this :(

Day 11 - Processing Fireworks

I had this grand idea to make some fireworks since today is Canada Day and all. I found a Processing sketch and ended up not making too many changes from the original. I changed the speed, some colours and the size of the dots of the fireworks. You can see the original sketch url in the source code.

Day 10 - iPhone & Safari's Develop Menu

Today I was going to tackle some of the mobile bugs of this site but I don't really feel like it cause me and the hubby are watching American Ninja Warrior. Yep.

Day 9 - CSS Shapes, pt 2 Picasso Baby

Here's the latest update on my CSS shapes. By the way, this post is totally not optimized for mobile so check on laptop/desktop. A future project will probably be to make it fully responsive. Maybe.

This was done in all CSS!

Day 8 - Flexbox & Equal Height Columns

Today, I decided to change the layout of the homepage. The common problem is always, how do I create flexible, equal height columns? I was going to pick one of these tried and true methods and decided to use Flexbox in the end since there is now decent browser support.

Day 7 - three.js

I been tinkering with my CSS shapes project from yesterday and it's going to take a little bit longer so I didn't want to post any updates just yet. So I decided last minute to do something else for today. I don't know why I thought trying out three.js for the first time was going to be faster but here I am, 12:45am, and finally posting today's experiment. Read more

Day 5 - Jekyll Blogging Templates

I've learned a valuable lesson about making excuses because when I woke up today, I actually felt bad about skipping yesterday. Disappointed even. I chose 30 minutes a day to make it an achievable task. I'm sure I spent 30 minutes yesterday on some bullshit activity so it would have been really easy for me to do.

Day 3 - CSS Filters

Tried out some CSS filters and made an "Instagram" like thingy. I think I'll continue with this tomorrow!

Day 2 - Github Pages & Jekyll

I was planning to just update the styles for this page for today's project but that wasn't much of an "experiment" since I was just writing some basic CSS. Instead, I decided to finally give Jekyll a try.
